Telecommunications Technology and Health Care Services

Health services that are delivered by way of telecommunications technology are known as telehealth services. It can be very simple as is the case when two health care professionals are discussing the best treatment for an illness on a Plain Old Telephone System or POTS! The communication technology may be quite complicated such as when doctors are doing robotic surgery at two different facilities that are separated by an ocean! In the beginning this technology was used for educational and administrative functions related to health care. Today it does a whole lot more. For example, a doctor may use email to order prescriptions and to communicate with his patients. There has also been an increase in remote home monitoring which is credited with improving mortality rates by 47 percent according to clinical trials in the UK.

A similar use of telecommunication technologies to provide actual health care to a remote location is known as remote health monitoring. Rural communities benefit greatly from this because you may be able to see a doctor for an ailment without physically being there. Telepsychiatry has proved to be very adaptable to the telemedical services. It has been used for prenatal diagnoses as well as for counseling in domestic violence cases. In diabetic pregnancy cases, remote monitoring of a patient's blood glucose levels, allows the patient or caregiver to see to it that glycemic control is improved. Another aspect of remote care is fetal monitoring where the data is sent to a tertiary care center for evaluation. Home monitoring of a pregnancy represents cost savings along with improved outcomes.

With regards to telehealth benefits, patients can access a specialist much quicker than they would if the specialist or the patient had to make a long journey to meet in person. There is also a reduction in hospital admissions since remote monitoring and consultations are able to effectively manage the health condition for the patient at home. It also avoids transfers from one facility to another. If the patient is already in the hospital, the clinical personnel can easily access specialist support so that they can provide better care. Again, it can eliminate the need for a patient transfer. This means the facility with the patient gets to keep him and collect the revenues they earn for patient care. Doctors can reach patients who need their care, plus the physician may be able to collect on-call pay for tele-consults!

There exists a business called myNEXUS that is a care management service. This service is technology-driven so that it allows folks to live healthier at home. The company is able to produce a prompt response time so that costly health care visits to a doctor or hospital are avoided.
